WordPress really bothered me in the last few days. I practically excluded myself from WordPress. That means, as stupid as it sounds now, I hadn’t done anything. Unfortunately, a malware trojan had lodged itself in a web project of one of my customers because he had not updated his website regularly. Since I put their web projects on my web hosting space for some of my customers, this Trojan then also attacked my own web projects.

With the well-known result. I was locked out of my own blog.

If WordPress makes problems

I probably don’t need to tell you that such incidents are not fun and that the end result is that I often have to spend a lot of time restoring the old state. But if a developer friend gets wind of it and makes fun of it (“Stupid, if WordPress fucks up again, eh? Haha!”), I could take the whole thing personally.

I don’t do it though. And not because non-reactivity – thanks to meditation that has been practiced for years – has become my middle name. But mainly because WordPress may have its weaknesses, but for me it offers an almost unbelievable amount of possibilities. I can even go so far as to say that few tools have changed my life so much and have brought me so close to fulfilling my purpose as WordPress.

WordPress is liberation and calling

For me, WordPress is a liberation and a calling at the same time. Because thanks to WordPress I can not only write but also publish. Thanks to WordPress, I can express myself and thus give my passion – communication and discussion – room to develop. I don’t have to please anyone to be read. I can simply attract and repel by being who I am and making room for it.

Better than 50 shades in aluminum foil

Thanks to WordPress, others can read me and follow my thoughts. Accept it or reject it. And thanks to the great anonymity of the Internet, they don’t even need to reveal their identities. It’s even better than wrapping “50 Shades of Gray” in aluminum foil for reading on the subway.

WordPress is not as pretty or fast and certainly not as secure as individually programmed websites. But I’m not a developer either – I’m about writing – and being read. For me it’s just about finding quick and easy access to as many people as possible. And WordPress is an incredibly powerful tool for that.

but free and wealthy

Nevertheless, WordPress is freer than ready-made blog pages on which you can publish under a foreign domain and are restricted, for example, with regard to monetization. Anyone who takes the effort and books their own domain and then looks for a good web host has secured a kind of property on the Internet. On this piece of virtuality, he can (largely) do what he wants. – Of course also growing and harvesting.

WordPress is also very well documented. For example, the forums on WordPress.org are a very useful source for me if I can’t get anywhere on my own. Even if there is perhaps no thread for my specific problem, I can at least derive first steps from threads on neighboring problems.

Solving WordPress Problems

Solving WordPress problems is mostly based on the same steps:

make all updates,
deactivate all plugins and then reactivate them one after the other,
Change theme,
Deactivate .htaccess and
Reload WP Core files.

In addition, a backup plug-in should be the first plug-in on every freshly set up WordPress website. In most cases this can be used to save a broken project successfully.

Even if – like me – you are not a developer.

WordPress is the most important publication tool for me: you can express yourself, find your voice and hopefully make your way.

Just step out of the shadows; you have to do that alone.

In den letzten Tagen hat mir WordPress echt zu schaffen gemacht. Ich hatte mich bei WordPress quasi selbst ausgeschlossen. Das heißt, ganz so dämlich, wie das jetzt klingt, hatte ich mich gar nicht angestellt. Es hatte sich nur unglücklicherweise ein Malware Trojaner in einem Webprojekt eines meiner Kunden eingenistet, da er seine Webseite nicht regelmäßig aktualisiert hatte. Da ich für einige meiner Kunden deren Webprojekte auf meinem Webhosting-Space ablege, befiel dieser Trojaner dann auch meine eigenen Webprojekte.

Mit dem bekannten Ergebnis. Ich war aus meinem eigenen Blog ausgesperrt worden.

Wenn WordPress Probleme macht

Dass solche Vorkommnisse keinen Spaß machen und im Ergebnis dazu führen, dass ich oftmals viel Zeit darauf verwenden muss, den alten Zustand wieder herzustellen, brauche ich dir wahrscheinlich nicht zu erzählen. Wenn dann aber auch noch ein befreundeter Developer davon Wind bekommt und sich darüber lustig macht (“Blöd, wenn WordPress mal wieder abkackt, was? Haha!”), könnte ich die ganze Angelegenheit schon mal persönlich nehmen.

Mache ich aber nicht. Und zwar nicht etwa, weil Non-Reactivity – dank jahrelang praktizierter Meditation – mein zweiter Vorname geworden ist. Sondern vor allem, weil WordPress zwar seine Schwächen haben mag, für mich aber vor allem eine schier unglaubliche Menge an Möglichkeiten bietet. Ich kann sogar so weit gehen, zu sagen, dass wenige Tools mein Leben so sehr verändert und mich der Erfüllung meines Lebenssinns so nahe gebracht haben wie WordPress.

WordPress ist Befreiung und Berufung

WordPress ist für mich Befreiung und Berufung zugleich. Denn dank WordPress kann ich nicht nur schreiben sondern gleich publizieren. Dank WordPress kann ich mich ausdrücken und damit meiner Leidenschaft – der Kommunikation und Diskussion – Entfaltungsraum bieten. Ich muss niemandem gefallen, um gelesen zu werden. Ich kann einfach anziehen und abstoßen, indem ich bin wie ich bin und mir Raum dafür schaffe.

Besser als 50 Shades in Alufolie

Dank WordPress können andere mich lesen, meinen Gedanken folgen. Sie annehmen oder ablehnen. Und dank der großen Anonymität des Internets brauchen sie sich nicht einmal zu erkennen zu geben. Das ist sogar noch besser als “50 Shades of Grey” in Alufolie einzupacken, um es in der Ubahn lesen zu können.

hässlich, langsam und unsicher

Dabei ist WordPress nicht so schön oder schnell und schon gar nicht so sicher wie individuell programmierte Webseiten. Aber ich bin ja auch kein Developer – mir geht es um das Schreiben – und um das Gelesenwerden. Für mich geht es nur darum, einen schnellen und unkomplizierten Zugang zu so vielen Menschen wie möglich zu finden. Und dafür ist WordPress ein unheimlich mächtiges Tool.

aber frei und wohlhabend

Dennoch ist WordPress freier als vorgefertigte Blogseiten, auf denen man unter fremder Domain publizieren kann und zum Beispiel hinsichtlich Monetarisierung eingeschränkt wird. Wer sich die Mühe macht und seine eigene Domain bucht und sich dann noch einen guten Webhost sucht, hat sich eine Art eigenes Grundstück im Internet gesichert. Auf diesem Stückchen Virtualität kann er dann (weitgehend) tun und lassen was er will. – Natürlich auch Anbauen und Ernten.

sehr gut dokumentiert

WordPress ist auch sehr gut dokumentiert. Für mich sind zum Beispiel die Foren auf WordPress.org eine sehr nützliche Quelle, wenn ich einmal nicht alleine weiterkomme. Selbst wenn vielleicht zu meinem konkreten Problem noch kein Thread existiert, kann ich mindestens aus Threads zu benachbarten Problemen erste Schritte ableiten.

WordPress Probleme lösen

Dabei basiert das Lösen von WordPress-Problemen zumeist auf den immer gleichen Schritten:

alle Updates machen,
alle Plugins deaktivieren und dann der Reihe nach wieder aktivieren,
Theme wechseln,
.htaccess deaktivieren und
WP Core-Dateien neu aufspielen.

Außerdem sollte ein Backup-Plugin das erste Plugin jeder frisch aufgesetzten WordPress-Seite sein. Damit kann man in der allermeisten Fällen erfolgreich retten.

Auch wenn man – so wie ich – kein Developer ist.

WordPress ist für mich das wichtigste Publikationstool: Man kann sich ausdrücken, seine Stimme finden und hoffentlich auch seinen Weg machen.

Nur aus dem Schatten treten; das muss man dann noch alleine.
